CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

I wiped my front eyes dry; I needed to stay alert for dangers and the way ahead was tangled with vines and branches and debris. :What if I become a Bazzle? Sure would be easier to navigate my way through this.:

What if a Bru:kean sees you first and shoots you on sight? Or our friend back there decides you’re mating material after all?

I hated when my hair made sense. “Fine,” I muttered, picking up a long, skinny branch, “I’ll stay in this form.”

I used the tool to move vines out of my way, especially the ones with webs on them, and to poke into underbrush to be sure nothing lurked under them to surprise me in a not-fun way. I hadn’t yet entered the thick of the forest on this bare dirt track and I wanted no more surprise attacks, friendly or especially otherwise.

With that thought, a small something dashed out of a bush on my right side, running over my foot. All I saw was way too many legs churning and flapping frantically in a shooing motion.

“Ew, ew, ew, what the hell is that thing? It—it ran right over my foot!” I shuddered at the memory, now hyperalert to its return. “It almost bit me.”

Oh, for Larry’s sake. It was a small, black bug that’s more scared of you than the other way around.

“Small! It was the size of an asteroid, a big asteroid! With way too many legs and big pincers and it could’ve killed me!” I stood stock still on the dirt path, panting from fright, afraid to move for fear another one would attack me. “And it could outrun me any day of the week. Plus, it ran right at me, like bugs always do…you know they do.”

Point conceded. Anyway, it’s gone so let’s move on. You do want to save Si’neada and Deester, right? So, let’s go.

Right, I do. I took a cautious step forward but nothing else charged at me so I kept going. I did, however, stop swinging my stick through the foliage for fear of what else I might disturb. The sun warmed my head, my radar ear swiveled around slowly, and I shed the angst of the bug attack as I walked onward.

I took time to appreciate the beauty of the forest now surrounding me, the way sunlight dappled through the leaves, the fanciful stripes on leaves, even a droplet or two sparkling on a web, although I fastidiously avoided running into any of those. The mere thought sent shivers down my spine.

The dirt track meandered and I wished I’d become a deer or something similar to move quicker but, without my hair’s cooperation, it wouldn’t happen. I stroked a velvety leaf as I brushed by a small branch. I heard twigs snapping behind me but my rearward eye didn’t see anything of note. I kept walking but more twigs broke somewhere behind me. I turned around for a two-eyed look to find what made the noise but still didn’t see anything.
